What are the symptoms of sepsis?

There are many symptoms of sepsis, which can vary depending on your age. 

Symptoms in babies and young children:

  • A rash that doesn’t fade when you roll a glass over it; 
  • Sleepier temperament than usual; 
  • Difficulty breathing/grunting noises or breathlessness; 
  • Blotchy, pale, blue or grey skin, lips or tongue; 
  • A weak, high-pitched cry. 

Symptoms in adults and older children are the same as in babies, with the addition of: 

  • High fever and loss of consciousness; 
  • Fast breathing and irregular heartbeat; 
  • Diarrhoea; 
  • Feeling dizzy and faint. 

Other more serious symptoms include continuous vomiting, swelling or pain around a cut or wound, lack of urination during the day, or feeling hot/cold to the touch.
