An ectopic pregnancy is when a baby grows outside of the womb. In most cases of ectopic pregnancy, the foetus is found in the fallopian tube rather than the uterus. It may also be found in the abdomen, cervix or ovaries. The most common cause of ectopic pregnancy is pelvic inflammatory disease, which can lead to damage to the fallopian tubes. Endometriosis may also cause an ectopic pregnancy, or a mother may be at risk if she has had previous pelvic surgery.
