Who is at risk of getting sepsis?

Anyone who develops an infection could be at risk of getting sepsis. However, there are certain people who are more at risk of getting infections that lead to sepsis, including: 

  • People over the age of 70; 
  • Babies under 1 years old, especially premature; 
  • People undergoing high intensity medical treatment e.g. chemotherapy; 
  • People with diabetes or another auto-immune disease; 
  • People with Down’s syndrome or sickle cell disease; 
  • People who have recently had surgery.
