The NHS Continuing Healthcare Scheme is set up to help fund adults who are in need of care, mentally or physically. Usually, these care needs exceed social care needs and are related to an individual’s health. Due to this nature of care needs, it may be seen that the person who needs the care should not be paying for it, and it should be funded by the government through the NHS CHC. When applying for CHC funding help, there is a checklist of NHS funded nursing care eligibility criteria that must be met and further assessments will be carried out if someone is deemed eligible.
Following the checklist stage, the local NHS CHC team will reach out to a Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) to carry out a full assessment for eligibility. Following that, the MDT will liaise with the Integrated Care Boards (ICB) who are responsible for commissioning the NHS CHC.
Unfortunately, many people who apply to this scheme may not be eligible. Being told you are not eligible for help can be very distressing for people and their families, and not knowing what steps to take or how to proceed can add to an already emotional time.
