University Hospitals of Leicester Trust Board is scheduled to hold further discussions at its public board meeting on Thursday regarding is Oral and Maxillo-Facial Service (OMFS).
In November 2016, UHL took the decision to suspend all resective (reconstructive) cancer surgery of the oral cavity and oropharynx prior to an extensive review of the notes of patients who had undergone such surgery in Leicester.
The latest update report to the Trust Board confirms that the reviewers met 38 patients. Of those patients, 13 are felt to have suffered physical harm, 1 appears to have suffered psychological harm and 2 others have potentially suffered physical harm. However, there are a further 63 patients who did not want to be part of the Trust’s review or who simply did not respond when the Trust contacted them.
The Trust have now hired a new experienced Consultant to head the OMFS service. However, those who have suffered injury may well be entitled to compensation for those injuries.

“It is really concerning to see that a number of people have potentially suffered serious injuries as a result of reconstructive surgery following cancer.
“It is bad enough to suffer cancer in the first place but even worse not to receive the appropriate up-to-date reconstructive surgery.”
