As we recognise Baby Loss Awareness Week, we join families, charities and healthcare professionals in remembering every baby who has passed away. We also honour the parents, siblings and wider families who carry that loss with them. Our thoughts are with every family who has known the unimaginable pain of losing a baby.

A baby may be lost through miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy, stillbirth or neonatal death. We know that for some families, grief brings with it an agonising question: could their baby’s death have been prevented? Could something have been done differently? Were the warning signs missed? This post is for parents who are quietly asking those questions.

When a family believes that failings in medical care may have contributed to the loss of their baby, a medical negligence claim can be an important way of seeking answers and accountability. But it is a process that must be approached with sensitivity.

As solicitors, we may need to ask difficult questions, request medical records and obtain expert evidence about what happened. Yet we understand that, for a bereaved parent, these are never just documents, dates and clinical decisions. They are memories of a pregnancy, a birth, a baby who is deeply loved, and the future the family had imagined together.

That is why the way we support our clients matters just as much as the legal work we carry out on their behalf.

Sometimes, the most important thing we can do is listen. To let a parent tell their story in their own words. To understand that they may need to pause, that some conversations will be especially hard, and that there may be days when they simply cannot face talking about their claim.

We communicate with compassion, and we make sure our clients know and feel that their baby is remembered as a person, never reduced to a medical event or a set of clinical notes. A legal claim may bring answers, recognition or compensation, and we can make sure that every family is treated with kindness, dignity and respect at every step.

Supporting parents through a baby loss medical negligence claim asks more of us than legal expertise. Our role is to carry the legal burden, so that you can care for your family and yourself.

This Baby Loss Awareness Week, we remember the babies who are no longer with us, and the families who continue to carry their loss. We hold every bereaved family in our thoughts. Your baby’s life matters, not just today but everyday.
