An independent review has concluded that 94 children were harmed while under the care of former Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) orthopaedic surgeon Yaser Jabbar between 2017 and 2022.
The review
The review examined 789 patient cases and identified serious concerns relating to surgical decision-making, consent processes, record-keeping and clinical oversight. Of the cases reviewed, 36 children were found to have suffered severe harm, with others experiencing moderate or mild harm. In some cases, children required further corrective surgery and continue to live with long-term pain, complications or disability.
A formal apology
Great Ormond Street Hospital has issued a formal apology to affected families, acknowledging failings in patient safety and shortcomings in how concerns were identified and addressed. Mr Jabbar no longer practises medicine in the UK.

Legal implications for affected families
Where a child has been harmed as a result of substandard medical care, families may have grounds to pursue a medical negligence claim. Such claims require careful consideration of medical evidence, whether the standard of care fell below what was reasonably expected, and the impact of the harm on the child’s long-term health and development.
