A recent inquest in Leicester has drawn attention to the serious risks associated with Group A Streptococcus (Strep A) infections, particularly when they progress rapidly.
The case involved the tragic death of a young child in December 2022, following what appeared to be a mild respiratory illness. The inquest concluded that the child died from sepsis caused by invasive Group A streptococcal infection (Strep A), with no breaches found in the medical care he received. Experts confirmed that his illness progressed too quickly for treatment to have changed the outcome.
What is Strep A?
Strep A is a common type of bacteria that often causes mild infections such as sore throats, tonsillitis, scarlet fever, or skin infections. While most Strep A infections are mild, in rare cases they can lead to serious complications such as sepsis.
Recognising the signs of a serious Strep A infection
Early recognition and medical intervention are essential. According to NHS guidance, symptoms of a severe Strep A or sepsis infection in children may include:
- Pale, blotchy, or bluish skin
- Fast or difficult breathing
- Extreme tiredness, confusion, or irritability
- A rash that doesn’t fade when pressed
- Refusing food or fluids, or producing little urine
If symptoms worsen quickly, or if something doesn’t feel right, parents and carers should seek urgent medical advice. Trusting your instincts can make a crucial difference.
Why Strep A awareness matters
While most Strep A infections are mild and treatable with antibiotics, recent cases across the UK have shown how unpredictable invasive infections can be. Increased public awareness of Strep A and sepsis symptoms can help families act quickly and potentially prevent severe outcomes.
The child’s family’s courage in sharing what happened helps raise awareness of early warning signs and the importance of seeking medical advice when something does not feel right.
Maryam Abdullah, our Senior Associate, commented:
“As a parent and as a solicitor, the story of this inquest truly touched me. It reminds us of the importance of listening to our instincts when it comes to children’s health, and of supporting families who face such unimaginable loss. Cases like this underline the importance of recognising the early warning signs of serious infection. Greater awareness of Strep A and sepsis can empower parents and carers to seek medical help when it’s needed most.”
