We were delighted to be the headline sponsor of this year’s British Heart Foundation Asian Business Board Gala Dinner. We were so pleased to be able to sponsor this inaugural event, which welcomed 500 leaders and changemakers to Birmingham for an evening of networking and entertainment, but above all the raising of important funds and awareness of cardiovascular disease and how it disproportionately affects the UK’s South Asian community.
The impact of health inequality
Our Partner and Head of Medical Negligence West Midlands, James Anderson, said in his opening speech: “I see first-hand the devastating consequences of negligent medical treatment and health inequality. At Lime, we believe that access to quality healthcare is a fundamental right—not a privilege. Yet, we know that this right is not equally realised across all communities. People of South Asian heritage, in particular, face stark disparities when it comes to heart health.”
James also shared some statistics:
- In 2023/2024 the NHS received 13,784 new clinical negligence claims averaging 37 claims per day or roughly one every 40 minutes.
- 31% of individuals from ethnic minority backgrounds have had to resort to private healthcare due to misdiagnosis or long NHS wait times, compared to 15% of white individuals.
- When facing a potential misdiagnosis:
- 96% of white individuals sought a second opinion.
- Only 89% of people with mixed heritage and 86% of Arab individuals did the same.
- Only 53% of people with mixed heritage felt confident approaching their doctor with a physical ailment, compared to 67% of white individuals.
- Ethnic minority women are disproportionately affected by medical negligence in maternity care, with inquiries revealing systemic racism and higher mortality rates.
Representing individuals and families from ethnic minority communities
We have represented and continue to represent thousands of people from ethnic minorities from across the globe including Indians, Pakistanis and Bangladeshis. We have handled numerous cases where the ethnicity of the patient has negatively impacted the care they have received leading to avoidable harm, and occasionally life changing harm. We all want to live in a fair, just society where instances like this simply cannot be allowed to happen.
We are a diverse business with a number of people from those very backgrounds fluent in a range of languages so we can truly understand people’s stories in their own words in their own language.
Over £40,000 raised for the British Heart Foundation
We were delighted to hear that this important event raised £41,500 for the British Heart Foundation. We are so thrilled to have been a part of such a wonderful evening where the crucial message that health equality matters was shared among so many people from communities all over the UK.
