Birmingham couple Hazha and Bahroz Ghafoor have spoken about their unimaginable heartbreak, after their baby girl Maily was stillborn due to admitted failings in NHS care.

The couple went through multiple rounds of IVF before welcoming their first child, now aged three, in 2022. After being overjoyed when they conceived Maily naturally, their joy soon turned to devastation when she was stillborn, weighing 6.4lbs at Birmingham Women’s Hospital in September 2023.

A note from Maily’s parents

Mum Hazha said: “I can’t do anything but cry at her grave. Being pregnant again, I am scared for my life as well as my unborn baby’s life. They didn’t listen to me and because of that, our baby died.”

Dad Bahroz added: “We love having children, they are everything to us. This has broken us. I didn’t think Hazha would make it. I was so scared she was going to die. It felt like I was watching my whole world slip away.”

Accessible communication

Hazha required translation support throughout her pregnancy, due to English not being her first language. Bahroz, who does speak English, was told to go home for the night when Hazha was admitted to hospital, which would have left her facing communication struggles by herself and with nobody to advocate for her. As such, Hazha fought for Bahroz to stay, “fearing she would die if he left.”
