If you, a family member, or a friend have been injured whilst working on or around a building site and consider the injury to be the fault of a third party then you could be entitled to compensation. Lime’s specialist team of accident at work Personal Injury (PI) lawyers assist many building and construction workers in bringing an injury compensation claim.
There are certain workplace regulations which employers must comply with to ensure that the construction or building site is safe for the employees and the general public who may come into contact with the site. If those responsible for the construction or building site have not complied with these regulations and an injury has resulted from their breach then it is important that you speak with one of our accident at work Personal Injury (PI) lawyers.
Common construction site illnesses and injuries
Individuals who work in the building and construction industry are often exposed to some or all of the following risks which can lead to injury:
- manually lifting as a result of moving heavy objects without assistance
- being struck by falling objects
- falling from a level above ground height
- dangerous or poorly maintained work equipment
- working with vibrating or noising tools that can result in noise induced hearing loss, Vibration White Finger (VWF) or Hand Arm Vibration (HAVS)
- lack of appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
- exposure to hazardous chemicals or materials such as Chromium and Asbestos
- scaffolding accidents
- electrocution
- working with untrained or inexperienced co-employees
Health & Safety Executive (HSE) data
Data from the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) suggest that between 2013/14 and 2015/16 that:
- Annually, circa. 79,000 construction workers in Great Britain were suffering from an illness that they believe was related to or worsened by their work. Of these 79,000 workers:
- 64% were cases of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs)
- 18% were cases of stress, depression or anxiety cases
- 18% were cases of other illness such as a work related skin or respiratory illness
- There were also circa. 66,000 non-fatal injuries at work between 2013/14 and 2015/16 which included: fall from height, slip, trip or fall, struck by an object and manual handling injuries.
Unfortunately, the HSE recorded 43 fatal injuries to workers in the Construction sector in 2015/16 and almost half of these deaths were as a result of a fall from height.
